THE ROLE OF CITIZENS IN THE GROWTH OF NIGERIAN PARLIAMENT

Nigeria is a country gifted with high level of human and natural resources. It possesses a federal parliament of 469 members altogether known as the national assembly which has arguably become the most corrupt and inefficient in the world.
According the the central bank governor,
Sanusi Lamido, Nigeria spends 25% of her expenditure over high costs of maintaining the national assembly which makes it the most expensive in the world but the lowest quality of debates and implementations. Therefore, Nigerians should demand for a cut in the recurrent expenditure so as to aid the nation’s target of being one of the 20 largest economies of the world.
The parliament is very central to any democratic governance. In fact, it is the most representative of the institution of government and bears the largest burden of resembling people in their barest form. The Nigerian citizens should posit a total revolution or reorganization of our moribund national parliament.
As part of national civil right to save the country from dictatorship, citizens should seek a total disengagement of power or absolute reversal of their insensitive and hostile system of implementation. The Nigerian people should command attention with moral authority to ensure efficient checks and balances without intellectual or political laziness.
In case of negligence, on the part of any legislative committees or subcommittees, it should be noted by the citizens and reported to the appropriate quarters with emphasis until satisfactory actions are taken.
Significantly, Nigerians should strengthen the parliament by voting wisely for their trusted representatives in the electoral system. The patriotic and intellectual citizens should provide welfare driven suggestions and strategies through all plausible means to provide a working, constructive and systematic parliament that promotes significant ethos to raise national integrity.
